The song is about the life of a sailor who turns into a pirate due to very hard living conditions on the ship where he’s working. The text, supported by a “piratish” music, describes the hard life on the sea: pirates were outlaws, chased everywhere and from everyone. They had to attack other ships in order to survive and use brutal force. There living on board of a ship was unhealthy and unhygienic. Not only they had to face up to the people who were chasing them, they also had to whitstand the whims of nature.
lyrics
I was a poor sailor and worked all day,
Was whipped and beaten, couldn’t get away.
We forged a plan, we made a pact,
There was no doubt, we had to act.
The captain’s gone, thrown overboard
We sail the seas in search of gold
The seas are vast, there is no king.
We make our laws and won’t forgive.
We live like rats and act like fools,
The world deserves the mercy we give.
Hey-Ho, Hey-Ho, Heee!
Hey-Ho, Hey-Ho, Heee!
On the horizon is rising a sail,
This is our chance, we will prevail.
Get your dagger, load your pistol,
Soldiers putt you in prison.
We attack the ship, we slay the men,
Take the prize and those who remain!
The seas are vast, there is no king.
We make our laws and won’t forgive.
We live like rats and act like fools,
The world deserves the mercy we give.
Hey-Ho, Hey-Ho, Heee!
Hey-Ho, Hey-Ho, Heee!
We live in the middle of a storm,
Men and nature fighting.
Sometimes we wish to land on a shore,
Where we could stop the hiding.
But when the sea is glowing gold,
We know there’s only one way to go.
The seas are vast, there is no king.
We make our laws and won’t forgive.
We live like rats and act like fools,
The world deserves the mercy we give.
Hey-Ho, Hey-Ho, Heee!
Hey-Ho, Hey-Ho, Heee!
